Brushing teeth: at dinner or at bedtime

The simple gesture of brushing your teeth at night is often overlooked, both in form and at the moment, and that can lead to dental health problems, which costs nothing to prevent and it is worth spending a minimum of time on it.

We are aware of dental hygiene, so we will never neglect it, since one of our goals is that patients can always wear the best of their healthy and beautiful smiles.


More than 500 types of bacteria reside in our mouths, and with the absence of saliva during the night, they usually camp at ease, that is, at that time the mouth is much more vulnerable to bacterial attacks, because saliva is an agent antibacterial that protects the oral flora of the harmful elements, and while it is asleep it remains still, without being able to exert its cleaning function.

For this same reason, brushing your teeth at night should be a mandatory task, with the aim of minimizing bacteria, and cannot proliferate in the dry mouth, which decreases the pH regulation of saliva, and in this way, acid aggression on dental enamel cannot be avoided.

In this same sense, just as we have bacteria that help maintain the balance of the oral flora, there are others that, on the contrary, get the energy to advance in the mouth, from the foods that are ingested, in the form of carbohydrates and sugars, so if immediately to the fact of eating that type of food, they are not brushed, they will have more chances of developing caries, periodontitis or gingivitis.

In a natural way, bacteria produce acid throughout the day, in more quantity when eating, so the only way to get rid of that bacterial film is by brushing the teeth, and thus the damage to the enamel and the damage will be controlled. That arise below it, like cavities.

For all this, and for the problem of halitosis that can be generated, the most important brushing of the day is the nocturnal, that in which the saliva does not act effectively for at least 6 or 8 hours.


It is usually recommended that the last brushing of the day be immediately managed after finishing dinner, as the amount of fluoride that is immersed in the toothpaste, remain for a longer time on the teeth, protecting and strengthening during the night the denture in full.

Although it can also be delayed brushing between 20 and 30 minutes after having finished dinner, in any case, it will also depend on the type of dinner that has been consumed, since acidic foods, such as citrus, vinegar or tomatoes, act as a sweeping bacterial plaque, and you can proceed to the brushing until an hour after having finished dinner.

In any case, and according to each particular case, the teeth should be brushed at the moment before the bacterial plaque begins to take effect, so that if even the saliva is active after having eaten, you can wait a little brushing, everything will depend on the type of food that has been ingested, and the type of enamel that the patient has, which may be more or less resistant to bacteria.

Sometimes it happens that the brushing of the night is forgotten, and it does not suppose greater problem than a hardening of the bacterial plaque, but that it can be arranged with the rest of brushed during the day that they are made.

We bet on white and healthy teeth, and that is why we defend the importance of brushing the night as one of the main ones of the day, and it is also a constant challenge, which should be instilled from the earliest childhood.
